The airline based in Vienna, Austrian Airlines announced that it was taken over by Lufthansa, the airline based in Germany by going through a contract with the Deutsche Lufthansa AG. Austrian Airlines takeover by Lufthansa, moreover the final validation will be declared in August 2009 or by September 2009. As an associate of Lufthansa, the financial source of Austrian Airlines will improve in the long term. Through the agreement with Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines will have the right to use the international destinations and sales network of Lufthansa. By taking over the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines will be able to reform itself and improve its level of competitiveness.

Austrian Airlines, the flag carrier of Austria has launched new routes to and from Amman. However, Austrian Airlines will make use of its Airbus A320 aircraft to serve this new route. In addition, the new route to Amman with Austrian Airlines is as from 515€. Moreover, Amman is the 15th destinations in the Middle East served by Austrian Airlines. Furthermore, Austrian Airlines is proposing Premium service to its Business Class passengers, i.e. Austrian Airlines’ passengers travelling in Business Class will benefit of ‘Business Sleeper Seats’ which comprises of 116 cm of legroom and an automatically adjustable back and footrests and also an integrated massage function.

The Commission has analysed the rescued aid for Austrian Airlines and has thus authorised it after checking that it abides with Community rules particularly the rescue aid is in the form of a loan guarantee for €200 million granted at market rates and the amount of aid is limited to what is needed to run the company. The Commission took such decision because of the financial crisis of Austrian Airlines.
